Wright Family: Builder Grade to Beautiful

When the Wright’s purchased their home in Westminster, MD they fell in love with the 9’ ceilings and great neighborhood, not the kitchen. The original space was basic — builder grade cabinets and Formica countertops. With the help of their sales consultant they were able to create a space they love with a lot of personal touches and glamour.

The Wright’s didn’t hate everything in their original kitchen. They liked their stainless-steel appliances and the general layout. Like many homes built in the 2000’s their kitchen is connected to their main living space with the space for a kitchen table bridging the gap. Although there were some things the homeowners could live with in their kitchen the project still had some hurdles to overcome.

Project Hurdles

  • Builder-grade cabinets
    As a young family, the Wright’s were not happy with the loud closing cabinets and outdated door and drawer fronts. They wanted something that more matched their personal style.
  • Tall ceilings
    Even though the tall ceilings were a great architectural detail to their home, they posed a slight problem to their kitchen remodel. How would the upper cabinets be structured? As the cabinets couldn’t be mounted to the ceiling what would be the best solution to utilizing the vertical space above where the cabinets ended?
  • Outdated flooring & countertops
    The original beige vinyl floor and dark Formica countertops left much to be desired. The homeowners had previously upgraded the flooring on the first floor of their home to dark, modern hardwoods creating little contrast between the kitchen countertops and the accompanying floor in the living room.
  • Island didn’t function
    The Wright’s were happy to have the additional counter space when entertaining but thought their island could do more and have a larger function for their family.
  • Insufficient lighting
    Although the original kitchen had a large window over the sink and recessed can lights in the ceiling, the homeowners never felt there was enough light when cooking or entertaining.

Solutions

  • New cabinets
    The Wright’s chose Waypoint 750F overlay cabinets with soft-close for their kitchen remodel. The bulk of the kitchen was done in a Painted Linen finish while the island was given extra attention in Cherry Java. To solve the issue of their 9’ ceilings they opted to purchase glass panel cabinets to bridge the gap.
  • Updated flooring and countertops
    As a young family, the Wright’s family needed a flooring solution that was durable, lightened the space, and complimented their new hardwoods. Luxury vinyl tile fit all their needs! Because the tile came in multiple sizes widths, and finishes it compliments the look and feel of hardwoods without the maintenance. A lighter wood look finish, helped brighten the space and completed the new white cabinets.
  • Island with integrated seating
    The homeowners felt that their island could do more in their kitchen. With the help of their design consultant, Katie, they created an integrated table, doubling the footprint of the island and the function. The semi-custom island also became the new home to the microwave which was replaced with a fabulous stainless-steel hood.
  • Additional and improved lighting
    The new Wright Kitchen has tons of lighting! Our master tradesmen installed custom lighting in glass panel upper cabinets as well as under cabinet lighting. Both are controlled with separate switches and dimmers. The homeowners provided the beautiful new pendant that hang above the semi-custom island.
